Tony Ferguson ended up experiencing defeat once more when he faced Michael Chiesa at UFC Abu Dhabi. Ferguson has now lost eight times in a row, which was the final straw in his professional career. However, the veteran received some insightful guidance from his long-time rival, Khabib Nurmagomedov, as he announced his semi-retirement.

At UFC Abu Dhabi, Michael Chiesa performed well and managed to submit to Ferguson in the very first round. After the loss, ‘El Cucuy’ hung one of his gloves for now. Ferguson said he’s not sure about retirement and kept another glove just in case he decides to come back again. Khabib Nurmagomedov was at the event and, when asked about this, gave a very heartfelt message to Ferguson.

It was not surprising for me because he is 40-years old. I just want to wish him all the best. He is truly one of the best…I just want to wish him all the best and his life is just beginning because he is 40-years old and just finished his MMA career now its going to be different, much better life.

Ahead of the fight in Abu Dhabi, Tony Ferguson revealed that he was feeling better and more confident. ‘El Cucuy’ also talked about going back to sparring sessions during his fight camp. Chiesa was on a three-fight losing streak, and many thought it was a fair fight. However, the ‘Maverick’ made it look easy and finished Ferguson.

The rivalry between Khabib and Ferguson showcases the harsh realities of MMA. The ‘Eagle’ left the sport in his prime as a champion and retired with an undefeated record. On the other hand, Ferguson, who once dominated the sport, stuck around, retiring with an eight-fight losing streak. But it looks like Nurmagomedov is happy that Ferguson will finally take the decision.

Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Tony Ferguson: The dream fight that never took place

Ferguson withdrew in April 2016 due to a lung ailment. Nurmagomedov was hospitalized in March 2017 due to issues from his weight loss. Ferguson tore a ligament in his knee in April 2018 after tripping over a cable while on duty with the media.

Finally, in April 2020, the COVID-19 outbreak resulted in travel restrictions preventing the fight. Because of the frequent cancellations, fans dubbed the fight “cursed,” preventing one of the most awaited battles in UFC history. Fans were extremely eager to see both legends collide inside the octagon during their primes.

Ferguson has called out Nurmagomedov several times in the years after his retirement. The fighter suggested that he and Nurmagomedov clash as TUF coaches. While the Dagestani were intrigued by the proposal, it did not materialize as intended. However, after that, all the mutual respect between the MMA legends remains undeniable.
