Belal Muhammad captured the welterweight title Saturday with a lopsided nod over Leon Edwards at UFC 304. Thereafter, it’s open season on the Palestinian-American fighter who fans and peers once billed a slow-running decision merchant. Everyone wants a piece; everyone is on the topic, and who else can rub it down the wrong way other than Colby ‘Chaos’ Covington?
The 36-year-old new champ did what Colby Covington couldn’t. He outwrestled and outstruck ‘Rocky’ all the way and snatched his belt. Covington currently stands as a three-time welterweight title fight loser. He last faced and lost to Edwards in the UFC 296 pay-per-view headliner. Although he never faced Belal Muhammad, that never stopped him from spewing ‘chaos’ before.

Covington (17-4 MMA, 12-4 UFC) and Muhammad have had a history of pointless yet fiery smack talks and online barbs. Not long ago, the American wrestler even dissed him as not title-worthy. Now, while he is high up in the pecking order, he thinks the ‘racist roid’ monger Muhammad has no intentions of ever facing him. The only time, he thinks, he ever got a callout was when there was a title package attached.
Speaking to Denis Shkuratov, he even (predictably) slammed the win by alluding to PED usage. Covington has had no next billing since Edwards beat him this past December. A ‘juicehead’ or not, should he not jump at the chance to face Muhammad? Is this placing bait, given others are calling dibs on the title shot as well? It’d be, but Covington just has a natural disposition to cause chaos; he even had bold claims about Edwards.

Muhammad became the undisputed 170-pound champion after defeating Edwards last weekend. It was an all-around dominant showing. Belal Muhammad, under the guidance of striking coach Horatio Gutierrez, outboxed him with tremendous speed. Edwards had some prime-value takedowns and ground game in later rounds. But ‘Remember the Name’ was worth every penny for the watch.

The dominant matchup would have instilled it in him to bounce back better. Colby Covington disagrees; subsequently, their title grudge match wasn’t the high-paced fight it was supposed to be.
Before the December pay-per-view card rolled in, he had insulted Edwards’ deceased father. So naturally, the MMA world was sitting on some fireworks to happen. While it hardly lived up to the hype, Covington thinks Edwards banked enough and got what he wanted out of it.
Not really, just because I know that Leon made so much money in the last fight with me, that I don’t think he’s hungry anymore…What is he fighting for? He’s already achieved everything…He’s a quitter. He’s shown it in the past. I don’t know what happened in the fight or how the fight went, but I could just tell you that I knew Leon wasn’t gonna be motivated.

Thus, Covington did not see the results at Co-Op Live going any other way. The American, 36, touts that he had better stuff to do and did not watch the match. However, he thinks ‘Rocky’ is one and done and back to prelims as he should.
