Russell Westbrook celebrates Westbrook Academy

Russell Westbrook is 35 years old and continues to try and make an impact in the NBA. His days of producing triple-doubles every game may have gone. But he can still give his all on the court with his unmatched energy and drive. The new Denver Nuggets star also uses that drive to make things better for others. As it has been with his philanthropic efforts of late.

The former league MVP teamed up with L.A. Promise to expand his Westbrook Academy. After the inauguration, he said this to FOX 11 Los Angeles reporter Brooke Thomas:

Being grown up in Los Angeles, knowing the resources I didn’t have. Have an opportunity to partner with L.A. Promise to bring something like this to South LA for their kids, for their families. What’s most important in education is our future……I just wanted to bring something that kids can enjoy.

Growing up in Los Angeles, Russell Westbrook mentioned that he is LA to the core. He knows what the community lacks and is striving to make a difference in whatever way he can.

The new school in South Los Angeles will provide 400 middle and high school students with opportunities that they would have struggled to receive otherwise. The superstar was seen with his family inaugurating the school and handing over the reins to the management. This is the third major project he announced in this past year.

Earlier he announced a project to build affordable houses. Then he also teamed up with a Little Kitchen Academy to help children learn and improve their culinary skills. With these efforts, it is clear that the former triple-double champion wants to create a legacy for himself and his family outside of basketball.

NBA superstars are winding down their offseason activities. With the next NBA season set to start in a few weeks, they will soon be reporting for training camp. For Russell Westbrook, he will have to leave his Los Angeles home and travel to Denver, Colorado. Two and a half hours by air and he will arrive at the Denver Nuggets practice facility.

For a player who grew up in LA, it would have made sense to stay back with the Los Angeles Clippers. However, the situations surrounding the team made it hard for him to stay. He preferred to move to the mountains to team up with three-time league MVP Nikola Jokic.

There he will be tasked to continue his incredible efforts from the bench. But it also brings about the perfect opportunity for him to continue his legacy as a team-first superstar. If that effort helps him win an NBA title, then his decision to leave home will be justified.
