Khabib Nurmagomedov is seemingly in a pool of trouble. Whether or not due to his own making, the legendary lightweight now faces a double-edged sword. Now, Russian media outlets are reporting that Khabib had all his bank accounts seized by the country’s tax authorities due to his surmounting tax debts.

Khabib hung up his gloves at UFC 254, making a final run against Justin Gaethje, and troubles outside the ring seem to be piling up. On Friday, June 28, Russian security forces stormed his Eagle MMA. The raid was substantiated mere days after Sports Politika reported that one-time fighter Ghadzimurad Kagirov had once trained there. Now, here’s what sports and political insider Karim Zidan scoops in:

The Egyptian journalist broke the news on Sports Politika. Soon after, Visegrád 24, Al Jazeera, OC-Media.org, and others picked up on it. With footage from Dagestan’s interior ministry emerging, authorities did a vigorous “check of the documentation” to check Khabib’s connection to it all. Now, after the Makhachkala and Derbent attacks comes the seizure of accounts.

According to a report by mma.metarating.ru, Khabib reportedly owed $3.3 million (or just over 300 million rubles) in taxes to the Russian Federal Tax Service. With him making windfalls and start-ups in Turkey and the UAE, the tax agency had blocked access. Additionally, with alleged links to anti-terror raids, they have reportedly totally seized said accounts. Khabib will have an uphill task to clear his name here.

Very few entities from Dagestan have had such an overbearing command of combat sports as Khabib Nurmagomedov. ‘The Eagle’ is worth quite a few millions. Even away from fighting, he has summed up ESPYs, lifetime awards, regional awards, and so on.

The majority of his windfall comes from fighting, endorsements, and perpetuity royalty payments. Under the UFC Promotional Guidelines Compliance program’s payout tiers, he made major relations as an athlete ambassador for Reebok. Dethrone MMA Clothing (@dethrone), SAN Nutrition, Mike Constantine’s AMA Fight Club, and Training Mask (@TrainingMask) were also his sponsors.

In 2019, Nurmagomedov also became the brand ambassador of Japanese auto giant Toyota for Russian target segments. Expanding his portfolio, he invested all such windfalls into the Al Firdaus Residence and Halal Compex in Turkey. In addition, Khabib also started his own celebrity brand food chain in the Middle East. ‘M-Eat by Khabib‘ is a sandwich-style beef sub chain that is quite popular.

Funnily enough, the Dagestani partnered up with Jacob & Co. – rival Conor McGregor’s go-to choice. Epic X Chrono Black Khabib, with a green mineral crystal dial in a 47mm black DLC grade 5 titanium, was quite the hit!

A year after the Toyota deal, he bagged Gorilla Energy (RUS) as prime sponsor. Khabib also found his calling in post-retirement passion, coaching his fellow Dagestani fighters at American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) and Eagles MMA. Nevertheless, the tax debt problem needs a resolution so that Khabib can receive control of his bank account.
