In the past, the MMA community has seen many intense rivalries between fighters. One notable rivalry was between Jorge Masvidal and UFC legend Chael Sonnen. Recently, it seems that Sonnen has revived this rivalry by criticizing Masvidal. As such, he has even compared him to the downfall of the newly released movie Joker: Folie à Deux.
Chael Sonnen is one of the prominent figures in the MMA community. Over the years, he has built a reputation for being outspoken and unafraid to express his opinions. He has not stopped criticizing fellow fighters, often using humorous comparisons to make his point. In a recent instance, Sonnen aimed at Jorge Masvidal, expressing his belief that Masvidal has failed to capitalize on his talent and potential fully.

UFC legend Chael Sonnen compared Masvidal to the recently released Joker franchise movie. Interestingly, while Joker: Folie à Deux debuted at the top of the worldwide box office charts. However, it was $120 million short of what it made in 2019. It has been much less successful than Joker. Similarly, Sonnen feels that Masvidal started his UFC career positively but failed to capitalize on that later.

Interestingly, it’s not the first time Chael Sonnen has publicly fired verbal jabs at the former UFC welterweight fighter. Before their animosity against each other, Sonnen seemed to like Masvidal and often praised him. However, their relationship soured over time and Masvidal even called out Sonnen for a fight at one point.
When Jorge Masvidal issued a stern warning to Chael Sonnen
At one time, Jorge Masvidal was one of the most popular fighters in the UFC. His stature in the promotion was further elevated after his iconic flying knee KO win against Ben Askren. Interestingly, this knockout is considered one of the most vicious in UFC history. Apart from knockouts, he has had heated conflicts with several individuals in the promotion, including Chael Sonnen.
Masvidal’s feud with Sonnen ignited when he publicly accused the UFC legend of being a phony gangster. This confrontation quickly escalated, with the former BMF champion openly expressing his belief that he could defeat Sonnen. While stating that, Masvidal also levied some PED usage accusations at the UFC Hall of Famer.

Regarding their current careers, Sonnen retired from MMA in 2019. Meanwhile, Masvidal announced temporary retirement after suffering four consecutive defeats. His most recent fight was against Nate Diaz in July 2024, but it was a professional boxing match. There is currently no news about Masvidal’s next fight.
